Lithuania's MP proposes to hold referendum on dual citizenship

Member of parliamentary group of the Labour Party Arturas Paulauskas collected 36 MPs signatures and registered a draft law on dual citizenship referendum. Paulauskas suggests that such referendum should be organised together with the upcoming presidential elections.

"Since globalization is growing, the question of dual citizenship raises a lot of discussions and negative opinions. The Constitution prohibits Lithuanian citizens have the citizenship of another state, thus by holding a referendum we seek o change provision of the Constitution, Article 12, paragraph 2, so that that Lithuanian citizen would be able to become a citizen of another state as well, " says Paulauskas.

The MP says that further regulation will be provisioned by the law. According to the current law on citizenship, dual citizenship is granted only for the people who had left Lithuania by 1990 and who automatically received citizenship of the other nationality.
