Afghan national arrested for rape in southern India

Indian police have arrested an Afghan national for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh's capital Hyderabad, a senior police official said Saturday.

"The Afghan national, studying engineering at Osmania University in Hyderabad, allegedly raped his girl friend who hails from northeastern India after calling her to his residence Thursday. He forced himself on the woman after she rejected his love proposal. Both have been friends for some time after meeting through a common friend," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Preliminary medical examination has confirmed rape of the victim, a postgraduate student, and the accused has been booked for the offense, he added.

Rape is common in India. In December last year, the horrific and fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men on a moving bus in the Indian capital shocked the country.
