An upbeat and alert-looking Hosni Mubarak has been wheeled into a Cairo courtroom for his retrial for alleged complicity in the killing of nearly 900 demonstrators during the 2011 revolt that ousted him.
The former Egyptian president, wearing brown-tinted glasses, waved from inside the courtroom cage in his Sunday court appearance. He was airlifted to the court from a Cairo hospital. His two sons and former interior minister, currently held in prison for separate cases, were also in the courtroom cage.
An Egyptian appeals court granted Mubarak a retrial and overturned his life sentence in January, citing shoddy procedures. Unconfirmed reports have emerged several times in the past year suggesting that Mubarak was on the brink of death.
