A powerful earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 6 hit Hyogo Prefecture and it surrounding areas in western Japan early Saturday morning. The quake was strongly felt in Osaka.
The quake occurred at around 5:33 a.m. local time. The epicenter of the quake was near Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture around 10 kilometers underground, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties and damages. The Japanese government has set up a task force at crisis management center following the strong quake, Kyodo News reported.
