Large number of vehicles remained stranded on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in four upazilas here due to severe traffic jam on Saturday. The four upazilas are Sadar, Daudkandi, Chandina and Burichong.
Highway police said a 45-km traffic jam ensued on the highway in the areas stretching from Daudkandi Toll Plaza to Comilla Cantonment.
The traffic jam started from 4am and it turned acute gradually. The gridlock continued till filing of this report 5pm today, inflicting sufferings to thousands of travelers.
People in large number started leaving for their home districts taking advantage of weekly holiday and Pahela Baishakh, which caused the tailback, said police.
Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mainamati highway police, said the traffic was moving very slowly on the highway in the areas. “We are, however, trying our best to improve the situation”, he said.
