A New York penthouse on 57th street sold for $90 million, a new record for a single residency in Manhattan.

The apartment, which overlooks Central Park from 57th street, sold at a price between $8000 and $9000 per square foot.

The purchase has topped a recent record-breaking sale of a Central Park apartment bought by a Russian oligarch for his daughter for $88 million.

The buyer of the One57 penthouse has not been identified but Bloomberg reported that it is not someone from the former Soviet Union.

The apartment will be located on the 89th and 90th floors with sweeping views of Manhattan from one of the city's highest vantage points.

CNN reported that the condominium building, built by Extell Development Co., is in the process of being built and will not be open for residents until next year.

The building includes 95 condo units with the lower floors taken up by the Park Hyatt hotel.

Prices for the condos start around $7 million.

Extell's owner Gary Barnett is a former diamond trader and began the company in the 1990s.

Its projects include the W Hotel in Times Square and redeveloping Enron's old headquarters in Houston, said the New York Times.
