Body of Indian prisoner killed in Pakistan flown to India

A special Air India aircraft on Thursday flew the body of deceased Indian national Sarabjit Singh from Lahore to the Indian border city of Amritsar in the Indian Punjab, officials at Lahore Airport said.

Singh, who was convicted of spying for India and involvement in a series of bomb blasts in 1990 and sentenced to death in Pakistan, died in a hospital in Lahore on Wednesday night. He was brought to the hospital from Lahore prison in critical conditions five days ago after he was attacked by two prison inmates.

His family says he is innocent and strayed across the border in Punjab by accident.

A Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesman on Thursday described the incident in which two prison inmates had attacked Singh as "extremely regretful" and hoped that Pakistani prisoners in India would not meet a similar fate.
