Chinese surveillance ships spotted near Senkakus

Two Chinese maritime surveillance ships were seen sailing near the Senkaku Islands, a Japanese-controlled islet group claimed by China, for the fifth consecutive day, the Japan Coast Guard said Monday.

The two ships were observed in the area just outside the Japanese territorial waters in the East China Sea, the Coast Guard said, adding that the two had intruded into Japanese waters near the islands on Sunday.

The Coast Guard's patrol ships issued a radio warning for the Chinese vessels to leave the area, but received a response saying the islands are "inherently territory of China," the Japanese maritime authority said.
