U.S., Taliban to hold talks in Qatar

The United States will hold talks with Taliban rebels in Afghanistan in a few days in Qatar, U.S. officials said Tuesday, a step, if realized, expected to help achieve peace in the country where the United States has been fighting for more than a decade.

The revelation of the talks came after Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid issued a statement earlier that the group is opening an office in Qatar.

An Afghan Taliban source said the office would commence operation Tuesday evening, the Afghan Islamic Press reported. AIP quoted the Taliban spokesman's statement confirming the opening of the office "to meet their goals" but did not disclose the timing of the opening.

In Islamabad, Taliban sources said that "some high ranking Taliban officials" have gone to Qatar to take part in the opening of the office.
