Nippon Life Insurance Co., the nation's biggest life insurer, is planning to require all male employees to take a weeklong child care leave if a baby is born from the current business year, company officials said Wednesday.
While many Japanese companies offer men child care leave, not many of them are known to make use of the employee benefit. It is rare for a major company in Japan to mandate all eligible to take it.
Of around 7,700 male employees at Nippon Life, around 280 were eligible at the end of May, according to the company. Of them, around 5 percent took the leave.
