Australia's Gillard calls vote on leadership

A special leadership caucus has begun after Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard called a vote on her leadership earlier Wednesday amid a leadership challenge by former leader Kevin Rudd.

The "special caucus meeting" of party lawmakers is at Parliament House in Canberra.

According to the Australian Association Press, Gillard expressed confidence of winning the vote and said she will leave federal politics if she loses.

Rudd said, "I will be a candidate" for the Labor Party leadership Wednesday evening.

Gillard became prime minister by ousting Rudd in a party leadership challenge in 2010.

Gillard has already set the next general election for Sept. 14.
