Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will visit Fukushima Prefecture on July 22-23, their third trip to the northeastern Japan prefecture since the nuclear disaster caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, the government said Tuesday.
The imperial couple will first call at a precision machinery component factory in Iitate, where an evacuation advisory is still in effect -- though business operations are allowed -- due to the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
On the second day, the couple will visit peach-growing farms in Koori that have been affected by sluggish peach sales due to radiation fears.
The emperor and empress will move to their villa in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture, later in the day until July 26.
