Kuniko Tanioka, head of the opposition Green Wind party, said Monday she will step down as leader and retire from politics after losing her parliamentary seat in Sunday's House of Councillors election.
The Green Wind party "has completed its role," she told reporters in Nagoya.
All of the party's four upper house members lost their Diet seats, leaving it with only two House of Representatives members.
Tanioka said it is up to the remaining two lawmakers to decide whether to disband the party.
