U.S. military confirms human remains at crash site as 4th crew member

The U.S. military said Saturday it has confirmed that the human remains discovered at the site of Monday's crash of a helicopter was the fourth crew member of the aircraft.

The 18th Wing Public Affairs of the U.S. Kadena Air Base said it has confirmed the death of Tech. Sgt. Mark Smith, 33rd Rescue Squadron flight engineer, 30.

An HH-60 rescue helicopter crashed Monday in a mountainous area within the premises of a U.S. military base in Okinawa Prefecture, about 2 kilometers away from the nearest residential area.

Three of the four crew members had been confirmed safe while one was missing. The Kadena base said Tuesday that human remains were discovered at the crash site and had yet to be identified.
