Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos said Monday that Japan and the United States have a "deep, deep bond with each other," calling his four-year term "wonderful amazing years."
"I hope in small way I was able to contribute to even deepening that bond further," Roos told reporters at Narita airport near Tokyo before leaving Japan.
"The most important (thing) we have enjoyed is the wonderful people of Japan," said Roos, who experienced the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern Japan during his tenure.
Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy, is the official nominee of President Barack Obama to become the next ambassador to Japan.
