U.S. aircraft carrier arrives in S. Korea for joint drills

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived in South Korea's southern coastal city of Busan on Friday to participate in a routine joint exercise with South Korea and Japan next week, South Korea's Defense Ministry spokesman said.

"The Search and Rescue Exercise known as SAREX is to take place on Oct. 9-10 and is an exercise on humanitarian grounds," Kim Min Seok told reporters.

The nuclear-powered George Washington is based at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, as part of the U.S. 7th Fleet.
