Japanese assembly member detained in China over stimulants possession

A 70-year-old Japanese city assembly member has been detained in China on suspicion of possessing stimulant drugs, the municipal government of Inazawa, Aichi Prefecture, said Friday.

Takuma Sakuragi, who is serving his fifth term as an assembly member, was taken into custody at Guangzhou's Baiyun airport by local police on Oct. 31, after illegal drugs were allegedly found in his belongings at the baggage check on his way back to Japan, according to the local government.

He arrived in China on Oct. 29, apparently on business for his own trading company.

The municipal government city was informed of the arrest by the Foreign Ministry.
