The government on Thursday compiled the next Mid-term Defense Program for the five-year period starting in fiscal 2014 with a 24.7 trillion yen budget, marking the first increase in expenditures following two straight periods of decreases, a government source said.
The amount was increased from 24.4 trillion yen earlier envisioned by finance and defense ministry officials for the next period. The program is expected to be approved by the Cabinet after endorsement by ruling coalition officials on Friday, the source said.
