Central Japan Railway Co. is planning to start construction of its magnetically levitated train line to connect Tokyo and Nagoya around the fall of next year, sources close to the issue said Sunday.

The railway operator, known as JR Tokai, will submit the construction plan to the transport ministry by the summer, with a senior company official saying, "We hope to start construction as soon as possible after obtaining state approval."

The maglev trains will be launched between the capital and Nagoya in 2027 linking the two cities in about 40 minutes, compared with the current 100 minutes or so by the conventional Shinkansen bullet train service.

The timing of the start of construction, however, remains fluid as the company still needs to negotiate with the local authorities and residents along the planned route over details of the plan.

The maglev train line is expected to be stretched further west to Osaka by 2045. The total cost of construction is estimated to reach around 9 trillion yen.
