Former Justice Minister and Metropolitan Police Department chief Kokichi Shimoinaba died of sepsis Monday, his family said Friday. He was 87.
After joining the now-defunct Home Ministry in 1947, he served as prefectural police chief in Tokushima, Osaka and Tokyo.
He gained a House of Councillors seat in 1986 and was appointed as justice minister by Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto in 1997.
