500 U.S. troops at Misawa base to be removed due to spending cuts

About 500 U.S. military personnel will be removed from the Air Force's Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture by the end of September 2015, the local government said Monday, citing information provided by the U.S. side via the Foreign Ministry.

It is the first time that an actual personnel reduction number has been revealed for a specific U.S. military base in Japan in connection with the mandatory cuts in U.S. defense spending that came into force last March.

Currently, roughly 3,650 U.S. service members belong to the base in Misawa, Aomori, in Japan's northeast.

The planned personnel cut will affect the Army, Navy and Air Force at the base and be conducted in phases, according to the prefectural government.
