Former Yamaguchi Gov. Shigetaro Yamamoto died of lung cancer on Saturday, two months after resigning due to poor health, the government of the western Japan prefecture said. He was 65.

Yamamoto was elected governor in July 2012 after serving as a senior bureaucrat at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. But he fell sick soon afterward and was repeatedly hospitalized before calling it quits on Jan. 14 this year.

During his tenure, he was an active supporter of national defense policies, as represented by his approval for the U.S. Marine Corps' MV-22 Osprey aircraft to conduct their first test flights over Japan from a U.S. base in his prefecture.
