Yukio Fujimaki, a House of Councillors member from the new opposition Yuinotoh party, died Sunday of hemorrhagic shock at a Tokyo hospital, his party and relatives said. He was 54.
Formerly a businessman, Fujimaki unsuccessfully ran as a proportional-representation candidate in the 2010 election, but was awarded an upper house seat in December 2012 after a winning candidate was ruled ineligible.
He left Your Party along with other party members and launched the Yuinotoh under Kenji Eda last December. Since late that month, however, he had been in hospital for treatment of acute pancreatitis, according to people familiar with the situation.
