The number of visitors to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka in fiscal 2013 was roughly 10.5 million, up 7.7 percent from the previous year and the second-highest figure since the movie theme park's first year in fiscal 2001, the park operator said Tuesday.
The popularity of a backward-moving roller coaster which opened in March last year and a family area featuring the characters Snoopy and Hello Kitty contributed to the high number, USJ Co. said.
According to the operator, visitor numbers remain favorable even after the 3-percentage-point consumption tax hike on April 1, the start of fiscal 2014.
USJ hopes to draw more visitors with a new area based on the "Harry Potter" film series scheduled to open in the second half of this year.
