The mighty mustache on David Axelrod's face may be in danger.

The mighty mustache on David Axelrod's face may be in danger.

The veteran adviser to President Obama has promised to shave off his upper-lip caterpillar if Obama loses any of the Democratic-leaning states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota in next week's election.

"I will come on Morning Joe and I will shave off my mustache of 40 years if we lose any of those three states," Axelrod said Wednesday on the MSNBC morning show. Axelrod did not mention what would happen if Obama lost Virginia.

To even the playing field, Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough pledged to grow a mustache if President Obama carries either North Carolina or Florida. Obama carried both states in 2008, but now both are trending toward Mr. Romney this time around, according to the Washington Times.

"You know what's good for you is that after the election's over you guys aren't going to have that much to talk about, so people can tune in every day and watch your mustache grow," Mr. Axelrod said.

The Washington Post noted his decision to put his money where his upper lip is as a reckless decision, one that put his "loyal companion of 40 years" on the line.

Maybe Axelrod is really that confident, or maybe he is just using this as his excuse to participate on GlobalPost's Movember team.
