Eric "the Eel" Moussambani — who emerged as a fan favorite for his famously slow performances in the pool at the 2000 Sydney Olympics — is set for an comeback.

However, this time Moussambani won't be competing as a 100 meter and 200 meter "sprinter," but as the Equatorial Guinea Olympic swimming team coach, according to the Associated Press.

Moussambani's one minute, 52.72 seconds to complete the 100-meter freestyle heats was more than double that of leading competitors, and even outside the 200-meter world record.

However, the the 33-year-old — who learned to swim the year before the Sydney games — was given a place at the Olympics through a wildcard system. What's more, he won his heat after the other two swimmers were disqualified for false starts.

When he began to fade near the end, the Sydney crowd roared for him to finish and awarded him with a standing ovation.

"Even today he still receives requests on our website requesting interviews," it read, promoting his enduring celebrity.

It wasn't certain how many swimmers the African nation would send to London for the Games, the Guardian reported.

According to the AP, his efforts embodied the Olympic spirit, which dictates that participation is more important than winning.
