The Ugandan military may be closing in on its search for fugitive warlord Joseph Kony. Ugandan forces have killed Kony's chief bodyguard, the Ugandan Ministry of Defense announced Sunday.

The bodyguard, Brigadier Binani, was killed near the town of Djema in eastern Central African Republic, Voice of America reported

Army spokesperson Col. Felix Kulayigye told journalists on Sunday that Binani had a very important role in Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). In addition to bodyguard work, Binani also helped with logistics, food and abductions for the LRA, All Africa reported.

"He was Kony's chief bodyguard and he was also the LRA's main logistician," Colonel Felix Kulayigye announced. He added that it was unfortunate that he wasn't captured alive to help provide information about Kony, the Associated Press reported

Kony fled Uganda in 2005 and has since roamed through South Sudan and the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Reuters reported. He is accused of abducting thousands of children and forcing them to fight in his brutal rebel army.

The non-profit group Invisible Children publicized Kony's brutality with a popular — though heavily criticized — campaign last year.
