Nigeria: Gunmen attack Kano police station

Gunmen have attacked a police station in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, where a curfew is in place following recent violence claimed by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

In Nigeria, gunmen attacked a police station in the northern city of Kano Monday night, where a curfew is still in place following recent violence claimed by the Islamist group Boko Haram, Agence France Presse reported.

One police officer was shot in the leg in the attack, in the Sharada neighborhood of Kano, which is predominantly Muslim.

Following an explosion at about 6pm local time, gun battles could be heard for more than an hour. AFP said it was too dark to identify the number of attackers.

Kano police spokesman Magaji Musa Majia'a told Reuters:

"The gunmen came from different directions to attack the Sharada industrial estate police station with bombs and gun shots … Our men at the station engaged them in a gun battle, and as I speak to you now our men has taken over the place and are mopping up the area."

Meanwhile a pharmacy in a market was bombed in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri, in neighboring Borno state, which is a heartland of Boko Haram.

Several vehicles and shops were set on fire, and Reuters reported black smoke billowing from a building.

The latest attacks in Nigeria’s Muslim north come after Boko Haram, which wants to impose Sharia law, killed 185 people in Kano in January, in its deadliest attack to date.
