Eleven people are dead after a vicious home invasion by Nigerian militants.

The gunmen shot and hacked to death the victims after raiding the home of the deputy governor of Adamawa state in Midlu village.

The deputy governor Bala James Ngilari was not home at the time but two of his security guards were killed.

Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram is suspected of carrying out the attack.

The group began carrying out terrorist attacks in 2009 and has killed thousands since.

Assailants called out the victims by name before killing them, suggesting a targeted attack.

"We have not made any arrests yet but joint military and police teams have been deployed to the village to track down the attackers who are on the run," a police spokesperson said after the raid.
