Somalia reporter killed in fourth journalist murder this year

A Somali reporter was shot dead Sunday outside his home in Mogadishu by unknown gunmen, making him the fourth journalist killed in the country this year.

Mohamed Ibrahim Rageh, a reporter for Somali National Television and Radio Mogadishu, was killed as he returned home from work.

He had fled Mogadishu in September 2009 after numerous journalists were killed and was one of the few in his profession to return to his country to continue his work. During this time, Rageh was Somali National Television's correspondent in Kampala, Uganda.

No group has claimed responsibility for the killing. Rageh leaves behind a wife and two children.

Somali Prime Minister Abdi Shirdon said in a statement that police and security forces should "spare no effort" in catching the reporter's killers.

Rageh's murder came a week after at least 30 others were killed by a car bomb, suicide bombers and gunmen at Mogadishu's law courts, as well as a car bomb explosion near the airport.

The Somali government said earlier this year that it would provide a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of anyone convicted of killing a journalist.

Somalia is known as one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Last year, 18 journalists and media workers were killed in the African country.
