A packed commuter train slammed into Buenos Aires' busy Once Station on Wednesday, killing scores of people and injuring hundreds.

The Associated Press reported that at least 49 people, including one child, died during the crash, which was the worst train accident in Argentina in decades. Another 600 were injured, according to BBC News.

Alberto Crescenti, the city's emergency medical director, told the AP that emergency workers were working to rescue dozens of people still trapped in the first car.

"There are people still trapped, people alive, and there may have been fatalities," J.P. Schiavi, the transportation secretary, told reporters at the station, according to the AP.

The train came in too fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform at about 12 mph, reported the AP. The crash smashed the front of the engine and crunched the leading cars behind it. BBC News reported that one of the cars was driven nearly six meters (20 feet) into the next.

"We assume that there was some fault in the brakes," Schiavi told BBC News.

Survivors told local channel TeleNoticias that many people had been injured in a mess of metal and glass, according to BBC News.

Passengers said windows exploded as train car tops separated from their floors. Buenos Aires trains are usually packed, with people standing between seats, and many were thrown into one another and to the floor when the train stopped.
