Mexico: US government employees' vehicle was attacked south of Mexico City, authorities say.
At least two US government employees were shot and wounded Friday morning in an attack on their vehicle south of Mexico City.
According to The Associated Press, the US Embassy four-wheel-drive vehicle came under fire on a highway leading to the city of Cuernavaca.
One employee was said to have been hit in the leg and the other in the stomach and hand. Both were admitted to hospital, BBC News reported.
A US official told the AP the employees were not agents of the FBI or Drug Enforcement Agency.
Authorities found the Toyota riddled with bullets when they arrived. The motive of the shooting remained unknown Friday afternoon.
CNN reported that the employees were US Marines, and quoted a Mexican military official as saying they were wearing civilian clothes. CNN also reported that three employees were injured in the shooting, not two.
The US Embassy has declined to comment on the incident.
