A man wanted for the murder of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase has been arrested in Mexico and is being returned to the US to face charges.

Joseph David Dorsey, 28, was arrested Tuesday near Rosarito by the FBI and Mexican authorities, reported the Associated Press. He had been charged with the murder of 47-year-old behavioral health specialist Christine Stewart, who he was said to have been dating. Stewart was reported missing on August 6. Her body was found days later in a rolling suitcase at a motel in northern San Diego County where the couple had checked in, but never checked out.

According to CBS, Dorsey had previously been convicted in 2006 of assault and battery on a peace officer, for which he was sentenced to three years in jail. He was also convicted in June of attempted burglary, which was pleaded down from burglary and grand theft.

Stewart's mother, Judy Brauer, told The Press-Enterprise she got a call from authorities about the arrest Tuesday afternoon.

"I was in the Dollar Store, of all places," she said. "I broke down and cried in front of everybody. I was just so relieved.

"I'm just so grateful that he's caught."
