GUADALAJARA, Mexico — A wave of violence in Mexico has left dozens of people dead in the past three days.

The BBC reported Tuesday that at least 16 bodies were found in the Toluca region near Mexico City on Monday and another 22 in the Mexican capital over the weekend.

Police believe the Toluca killings are linked to organized crime – some of the bodies had been dismembered with notes left nearby, Agence France-Presse reported.

The deaths in Mexico City, however, are believed to be isolated incidents with nothing to do with organized crime, the AFP said, citing the city’s top prosecutor, Rodolfo Rios, who described the weekend as “atypical.”

Mexico City normally averages less than two murders per day.

The Los Angeles Times reportedthat most of the deaths in Mexico City were gun-related.
