Herman Cain is now leading in the Republican field, topping former front-runner Mitt Romney by 20 points, says a Zogby poll released Thursday.

According to the poll, Cain would edge President Obama in a general election by a 46 percent to 44 percent margin.

Reports Yahoo News:

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, would lose by a point to the president, 40 percent to 41 percent. Texas governor Rick Perry, who has slipped in the polls of late, would lose to the president 45 percent to 40 percent.

According to the poll, 38 percent of Republican primary voters said they would vote for Cain if the primary was held today. According to Yahoo News, 18 percent of voters would support Romney and 12 percent said they would vote for Perry or Ron Paul, a Texas congressman.

Cain has been leading the pack in Zogby polls for two months now, but he's surged ahead of his competitors by another 10 points.

Cain is most notable for his 9-9-9 tax reform plan.  He proposed replacing the current tax system by implementing a 9 percent corporate tax, a 9 percent personal income tax, and a 9 percent national sales tax.  This, he believes, would revive the economy by promoting growth, and it would free tax payers from the current, complicated tax code.
