A U-Haul carrying beer kegs at a Yale-Harvard tailgate party drove into a crowd, killing one woman and injuring two more, the Associated Press reported.
The truck driver drove onto a grassy parking field across from the Yale Bowl stadium and suddenly sped up toward a crowd, striking three people before crashing into two parked trucks.
“I heard people screaming,” Gaby Jenn, a Yale senior, told The New York Times. “I turned around and saw three people on the ground.”
New Haven Police spokesperson David Hartman told reporters it’s not clear why the young male driver, who’s identity has not been released, accelerated into the group of people.
The 30-year-old woman that was killed from the impact was declared dead at about 10:15 a.m. at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Her identity was not immediately released. The second woman is stable after being listed in critical condition and the third suffered minor injuries.
Administrators from Yale and Harvard have attempted to curb excessive drinking at the annual event, noting that it has been a chronic problem, the NY Times reported.
