Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has a life threatening condition that will require surgery in Febuary, the Associated Press reported today.

A federal judge disclosed that Edwards, 58, has a life-threatening heart condition, a court source told CNN.

Edwards had sought a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin later this month. The trial is now set for March 26, USA Today reported. Theformer Democratic presidential candidate is facing trial in North Carolina for allegedly abusing $1 million of campaign finances.

Prosecutors say that they're ready to try Edwards on six felony and misdemeanor counts for using campaign related funds to help hide his pregnant mistress during his 2008 White House run, the AP reported.

At a hearing last month, Edwards appeared healthy, according to the AP.
