Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is not shy about his firm stance on abortion. And his wife, Karen Santorum, presumably agrees, sticking close to her husband's side and helping him deliver their message that abortion is wrong, even in cases of rape and incest.

On Meet the Press, Santorum even said that he "would advocate that any doctor that performs an abortion, should be criminally charged for doing so."

And his wife Karen Santorum agrees, right?

His wife's relationship with the abortion debate seems to be a little more complicated.

A Newsweek and Daily Beast report claims that her ex-lover is an obstetrician and abortion provider in Pittsburgh. Furthermore, they reportedly lived together for six years.

Although Dr. Allen and Mrs. Santorum (then known as Karen Garver) are 40 years apart, they go way back and have a closer bond than most people can imagine.

Besides being her ex-boyfriend, Dr. Allen also literally delivered Karen into the world in 1960.

The two started dating in 1982 when Karen was 22, and Allen, 63.

They broke up on good terms in 1988 because Karen wanted to have children but "that was something I had already done," Allen told Nancy Hass of Newsweek.

Karen Santorum then met her husband-to-be and got married in 1990 to anti-abortion conservative presidential hopeful Rick Santorum.

Recently, however, Rick Santorum took some heat from a small town-hall meeting in South Carolina, where he was confronted about subsidizing abortion and Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in the US.

Santorum paused for a quick second and responded, “There is nobody that’s been a stronger pro-life leader in the United States Congress than I was.”

As always, you can see Karen Santorum standing at her husband's side.

Towards the end of the video she quickly interrupts her husband's response to whisper to him something about Ron Paul opposing anti-abortion bills.

It seems that to Karen and Rick Santorum, her past is but a memory.

And Dr. Allen, now 92 years old, remains an active crusader who continues to fight for reproductive rights and liberal ideals, according to the Daily Beast.
