George H.W. Bush to formally endorse Mitt Romney

Nation's 41st president has made supportive comments in the past about Romney, and Barbara Bush has recorded robocalls for him.

Former President George H.W. Bush is scheduled to formally endorse GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney for president on Thursday.

The nation's 41st president will make the endorsement in Houston, where he's meeting with Romney, CBS News reported.

Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho told the AP the two will appear together and speak to reporters.

The elder Bush has made supportive comments in the past about Romney, and his wife Barbara Bush has recorded robocalls for the candidate, according to CBS.

"We have known the Romneys for years and believe Mitt is the best man to lead the country for the next four years and Ann will make a great first lady," the former first lady says on the call, according to CNN.

Last December, Bush made it clear he intended to support Romney in an interview with the Houston Chronicle.

"I think Romney is the best choice for us," he told the newspaper.

George and Barbara Bush's son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, endorsed Romney last week, the AP reported.
