JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Louis Oosthuizen's South African fans are mourning his loss to Bubba Watson in the 2012 Masters at Augusta, Georgia.
A win by Oosthuizen would have meant the chance for his best friend Charl Schwartzel, a fellow South African and last year's Masters champion, to present him with the green jacket, the South African Press Association reported.
Fans in South Africa stayed up until the early hours in the hopes of seeing a second straight South African win.
But it was not to be.
Watson won on the second playoff hole at Augusta on Sunday, despite Oosthuizen, the pride of Mossel Bay on South Africa's Southern Cape, making one of the most impressive shots in Masters history.
“I played well. This is not one I felt like I played badly," Oosthuizen told the Associated Press.
Watson also made a memorable shot, hooking a wedge off the pine needles from 155 yards to about 10 feet from the hole.
"Proud of him either way," one of Oosthuizen's South African fans said on Twitter.
Defending champion Schwartzel was 18 shots off the pace.
