A judge sentenced former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi to 30 days in jail Monday for using a webcam to spy on his roommate's intimate encounter with another man.

Ravi, 20, was told to report to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional facility on May 31. He was also placed on three years' probation, CBS News reported.

He was convicted in March of 15 criminal counts, including bias intimidation and invasion of privacy, for using his webcam to watch his 18- year-old roommate Tyler Clementi kissing another man in September 2010. Clementi committed suicide just days after the online peeping, The Associated Press reported.

Judge Glenn Berman also ordered Ravi to get counseling and pay $10,000 toward a program to help victims of hate crimes.

The judge said he would not recommend Ravi be deported to India, where he was born and remains a citizen, according to the AP.

The relatively light sentence -- Ravi faced up to 10 years in prison -- surprised many who were watching the hearing, as it came after the judge spent several minutes criticizing Ravi's behavior, The New York Times reported.

“You lied to your roommate who placed his trust in you without any conditions, and you violated it,” Berman said. “I haven’t heard you apologize once.”

The sentence followed emotional testimony from the Clementi and Ravi families. Prosecutors had wanted prison time, and said they planned to appeal the sentence, The New York Times reported.

“Dharun's dreams have been shattered and he has been living in hell for the last 20 months," Ravi's sobbing mother, Sabitha Ravi, said, according to The Record. “As a mother I feel that Dharun has really suffered enough. My 20-year-old son has too much of a burden on his shoulders.”

Clementi's father, Joe Clementi, told the judge that Ravi deserved to be punished. He said Ravi "still does not get it" and has no remorse, according to the AP.
