Jerry Sandusky appealing child sexual abuse conviction

Disgraced Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky is appealing his conviction in the sexual abuse case that rocked the school.

Lawyers representing the 68-year-old assistant to the legendary, but tarnished, Joe Paterno said they didn’t have enough time to wade through the evidence.

According to CNN, defense attorneys Joe Amendola and Karl Rominger filed appeal documents today in Pennsylvania’s Centre County court.

Had they more time to sort through documents, photos and computer equipment, lawyers said they could have secured an acquittal, CNN said.

Attorneys said a judge should toss the convictions or hold a new trial due to a lack of evidence and statute of limitations expiring, Reuters reported.

They said the court delays violated Sandusky’s constitutional rights.

A jury convicted Sandusky this June of 45 counts of sexual abuse.

He received a sentence of no less than 30 years, and no more than 60 years in prison for the abuse of 10 boys over 15 years.

An alleged cover-up led to the firing of Paterno and university president Graham Spanier.

A lawsuit against Penn State is pending.
