A massive 85 car pileup in Cincinnati, brought on by unusually icy roads, killed a 12-year-old girl and injured 20 on Monday, as well as the shut-down of two major Ohio highways.

Cincinatti.com writes that the most serious accident in a Monday of icy road mishap occurred after 11:30 AM, when a snow squall threw a major highway into disarray.

Cars began spinning into one another, and soon 87 had piled up on one another, which according to Cincinnati.com, "crunched the vehicles together like an accordion."

The girl who died in the incident appears to have either been outside of her car and then struck by another vehicle, or by a guardrail wire, says WKRC Cincinnati.

Twenty wounded motorists were taken to area hospitals, while the identity of the young victim has yet to be released, says WHIO.com.

Both directions of the highway eventually reopened in the evening after the wreckage was cleared, reports WKRC Cincinnati.

In November, a 50-car-pileup in Beaumont, Texas killed two people and injured about a 100 on Thanksgiving Day, when many Americans are in holiday transit.
