A suspect armed with a sharp object went on a stabbing spree at a Texas community college, injuring at least 14 people.

The suspect was detained after a student tackled him as he ran across the campus of Lone Star College CyFair, Harris County deputy Thomas Gilliland tells reporters.

Four victims were taken by helicopter to a local hospital in critical condition.

A total of 12 victims were hospitalized and two refused treatment.

Police got the initial report of the stabbing spree at 11:15 am and the school was placed on lockdown.

Initial reports said there was more than one suspect but police later clarified that they believe the have the only suspect in custody.

"Stay away from the area," the college advised its students under a big red Alert! sign on its website. "Seek shelter in a secure location until the incident is resolved."

A different Lone Star College campus was the scene of another attack in January where three people were shot in what was thought to be a gang-related incident.
