A young surfer had a lucky escape after he was attacked by a shark at a Florida beach on Saturday.

Michael Adler, 16, was surfing with four friends at Melbourne Beach, an area known for its bull sharks, when he felt the shark latch onto his leg, ABC News reported.

“His whole jaw just crammed down on my leg and right from there I kind of knew it was a shark attack,” Adler said.

“So then I was paddling in as fast as I could.”

Adler as well as doctors credit another surfer with saving his leg because he used his surf board leash as a tourniquet.

He said the unknown hero's military training was paramount to ensuring there was no permanent damage, WSVN reported.

Adler underwent surgery and remains in hospital.
