A special Sandy Hook Task Force voted unanimously Friday to recommend to the board of education that the school be demolished.

The school has remained closed since the December 14 massacre when Adam Lanza allegedly opened fire killing 26 teachers and children, before taking his own life.

The proposal for a new $57 million school to be built on the site will be submitted to the education board, and it is likely there will then be a townwide referendum, the New York Daily News reported.

The families of some victims welcome the plan.

"I will chain my body to it in protest if they try to reopen it,” Erica Lafferty, the daughter of murdered school principal Dawn Hochsprung, told NBC Connecticut earlier this month.

"It should be knocked down. There should be some type of long-lasting memorial.“

Many teachers agree and have made it clear they never want to set foot in the building again, NBC reported.

Plans under consideration propose a new school with a shape that resembles homes and barns, with 26 glass cupolas on the roof with spires "pointed towards heaven" in remembrance of the 26 victims, Fox News reported.

Students from Sandy Hook currently attend the nearby Chalk Hill Middle School.
