Lois Lerner has reportedly been removed from her job as head of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a congressional aide told the Associated Press on Thursday, the latest mark of turmoil at a powerful government agency in the grip of scandal.

The report, which has yet to be confirmed, came a day after Lerner told lawmakers she was innocent of any wrongdoing amid accusations that the agency purposefully targeted conservative organizations. Pleading the fifth, Lerner refused to answer further questions.

New acting IRS head Danny Werfel is said to have informed employees of the move in an email Thursday, according to AP, identifying Corbin as the agency's deputy director of submission processing in the wage and investment division.

Lawmakers have spent the past two days investigating reports of bias at the IRS.

President Barack Obama said he was surprised by the "outrageous" news, while The Washington Post suggested he may have been purposefully kept in the dark.
