Naval Academy investigating three football players alleged sexual assault

A Pentagon spokesman said Friday that the US Naval Academy is investigating three members of its football team for allegedly sexually assaulting a female midshipman.

According to the New York Times, the Academy was delaying one of the midshipmen from graduating and being commissioned into the Navy. No formal charges have been brought against the men.

Susan Burke, a lawyer for the female midshipman said the alleged rape took place last year in an off-campus house in Annapolis while the woman was intoxicated.

Burke said the woman later found out that the three football players had boasted on social media they had sex with her while she was drunk.

"The entire (Naval Academy) community knows about this," Burke told the Associated Press.

Burke said the woman was "ostracized" on campus after she reported the alleged sexual assault to Navy criminal investigators who disciplined her for underage drinking, the Times reported.

Meanwhile, Burke said the players have continued to play football over the last year during the Academy's ongoing investigation.

Officials at the school declined further comment.
