Two teen girls are being held after a security guard at a Victoria's Secret lingerie store discovered a fetus inside one of their shopping bags.

The 17-year-old girls were suspected of shoplifting at the New York City store, police said.

The security guard went to check their shopping bags when one of the girls admitted she had "a baby in the bag," CBS 2 reported.

Police were called and the girl later told authorities that she had given birth a day earlier and did not know what to do with the fetus.

It is not clear if the baby was alive at the birth.

One of the girls was taken to Bellevue hospital and the other was being questioned at a police precinct.

Neighbors told CBS2 that they were stunned by the tragic news.

"I have two daughters. The youngest one is 18 and she would probably be terrified. But there's so many things you could do. Leave it in a church. Go to the hospital and just say 'I don’t want it,' which is not a good thing at all, but it's better than doing this," one resident, Ivetzy Sosa, told the network.

The medical examiner's office is reportedly performing an autopsy on the human remains found inside the bag.

Robin Hoffman, a spokeswoman for Limited Brands, which owns Victoria's Secret, told CNN that the company had no comment on the ongoing investigation.
