Australians today celebrated their national day, Australia Day, throughout the continent.  Formerly known as Anniversary Day, the holiday commemorates the "First Fleet's" arrival at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the subsequent established of the first British colony in Australia.

The country celebrates the holiday in a variety of ways. Many take to the beach in order to cool off due to the blistering summer heat, while others enjoyed the palpable intensity of the Australian Open semifinals, highlighted by the match that pitted Rafael Nadal against Roger Federer. The Big Day Out concert, which coincided with the holiday, drew a large crowd, headlined by Kanye West and Cage the Elephant, among others.
